Some destinations leave an impression, others completely capture your imagination. My week-long journey through Japan was very much the latter. Perfectly curated and seamlessly organised, every moment of the trip felt thoughtfully designed to showcase the country’s remarkable balance between ancient tradition and cutting-edge modernity.

Tokyo: Where Tradition Meets the Future
My adventure began in the vibrant capital of Tokyo, a city that feels endlessly alive. One of the most surreal moments was standing in the middle of the world-famous Shibuya Crossing, watching thousands of people move in perfect synchronisation beneath towering screens and glowing lights.

Yet Tokyo also revealed its quieter, deeply spiritual side. Visiting Sensō-ji, the city’s oldest temple, offered a peaceful contrast to the urban energy surrounding it. Walking through the lantern-lined approach and watching incense smoke drift through the air felt like stepping into centuries of history.

Another highlight was taking part in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, a beautiful ritual rooted in mindfulness and harmony. Learning the etiquette and symbolism behind each movement gave a deeper appreciation of the elegance that defines Japanese culture.

Tokyo’s futuristic side was equally captivating. The immersive installations at teamLab Planets TOKYO felt like stepping inside a dream, while panoramic views from Tokyo Skytree revealed the sheer scale of this incredible metropolis.

Exploring atmospheric alleyways like Shinjuku’s Omoide Yokocho, discovering quirky cafés, and visiting the magical Studio Ghibli museum made every day feel completely different from the last.

Just outside the city, the landscapes changed dramatically. A day trip to Mount Fuji and the serene shores of Lake Kawaguchi offered breathtaking views of Japan’s most iconic peak, while nearby Hakone delivered hot springs, mountain scenery and a refreshing escape from the city.

Kyoto: The Cultural Heart of Japan
Travelling to Kyoto on Japan’s famously efficient bullet train felt like entering another world entirely. If Tokyo represents Japan’s future, Kyoto embodies its soul.
Walking through the endless vermillion gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha was unforgettable. The pathway winds through forested hills, creating one of the most atmospheric experiences in the country.

At Kinkaku-ji, the famous golden temple shimmered beautifully above its reflective pond, while the bamboo groves of Arashiyama Bamboo Grove felt serene and almost otherworldly.
Kyoto offered a rare opportunity to slow down and truly appreciate the elegance of traditional Japan.

Osaka: Energy and Entertainment
The final stop was the lively city of Osaka. Known for its vibrant street culture and incredible food scene, Osaka provided the perfect finale.

Exploring the neon-lit canals of Dotonbori was exhilarating, while the historic grounds of Osaka Castle added another fascinating glimpse into Japan’s past.

A visit to Universal Studios Japan, particularly the immersive Super Nintendo World, which is a great day out for all ages, brought out a childlike sense of excitement that perfectly balanced the cultural experiences of the trip.

A Culinary Journey to Remember
No trip to Japan would be complete without experiencing its extraordinary food culture. Every meal felt like an art form, beautifully presented, perfectly balanced, and deeply rooted in tradition.

From fresh sushi and comforting bowls of ramen to sizzling street food in Dotonbori, each region offered its own unique flavours and specialities. One of my favourite discoveries was matcha, Japan’s finely ground green tea powder that appears in everything from traditional tea ceremonies to delicate desserts and lattes. Its earthy flavour and vibrant colour quickly became a daily ritual throughout the trip.

It truly was the experience of a lifetime, and thanks to such thoughtful planning, I was able to experience Japan in a way that felt both luxurious and deeply authentic.
Exploring and shopping in Shinjuku
One phrase I heard during the trip stayed with me long after I left Japan: “Ichi-go ichi-e.”
This traditional Japanese proverb translates roughly to “one time, one meeting,” and reflects the idea that every encounter in life is unique, can never be repeated in exactly the same way and should be fully appreciated, something I felt deeply while travelling through Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
